Jacques Cartier in Gaspé

On July 24, 1534, during his first voyage to Canada, Jacques Cartier erected a cross at Gaspé. After this symbolic gesture, he took possession of the territory in the name of King François I of France. The Gaspé cross was emblazoned with the fleur de lys and the name of François I.
