Museum Plaza to transform into 19th Century Western Canada

Hull, Quebec, April 29, 1996 - Construction has begun on Opening the West, the Canadian Museum of Civilization's summertime Plaza exhibition.

From now until May 17, a railway station, frontier-style buildings, oil derrick and prairie gardens will take shape. Once they're in place, visitors will be swept back in time to the days when pioneers were settling Canada's West.

An exciting component of this exhibition is the SimEx simulator which promises to be a major Museum attraction this summer. SimEx is a pioneer in today's virtual simulation industry, and its presentation of Opening the West - the Ride offers a cinematic tour of present-day Canada, unlike any you've ever experienced.

Sit in any of the 40 seats on the simulator platform which faces a 5.4-meter-high screen (17'10"), and hold on! When the lights go down, you'll take off on a magic carpet ride. The platform moves gently as you lift off from Vancouver Island, soar over the Rockies, and swoop down into Calgary's Saddledome, where a hockey game is in progress. Fly across the Prairies, and then visit Toronto, Ottawa-Hull and Montreal, before finding yourself in a Maritime fishing village, and swimming in the ocean with a pod of whales. The last part of the journey takes you from the depths of the sea to the outer reaches of space.

The five-minute film was originally produced by the Canadian Government for the 1993 Taejon Exposition in South Korea and has been adapted for use in this presentation.

Opening the West opens to the public on May 17 and is just the gateway to many new attractions at the Museum this summer.
