The Adventure Continues at the Children's Museum

Hull, Quebec, July 18, 1996 - Adventure World, opened on July 20, brings the Children's Museum into the great outdoors. The Children's Museum at the Canadian Museum of Civilization invites you to explore Adventure World, a brand-new exhibition park located behind the Museum, on the banks of the Ottawa River.

Adventure World is an extension of the Children's Museum, comprising 6,000 square metres of outdoor space. With its permanent exhibitions and organized events, it will be a wonderful family attraction full of surprises, inviting the participation of visitors of all ages. Activities will be ongoing, with a variety of daily programmes. This major exhibition project is being developed over two years. The following exhibits will be produced for this summer.

Ms. Frizzle will arrive at the Children's Museum in November, as part of a special exhibition - in the meantime, visitors can visit the Magic School Bus kiosk, where children can take part in projects using the elements of water, air and wind.

It's Your Move, a major attraction, will feature games from around the world, where visitors can play marbles, hopscotch and chess on a giant chessboard - players take note!

The Best of Summer Fun Tent, a multidisciplinary space, is dedicated to budding artists, who will be able to try their hands at street theatre and visual arts projects. This site will also showcase a variety of arts events and activities, including workshops on juggling, kite-making and mask-making.

Waterways! is inspired by the waterfront activities seen along the coastline of Canada. There are several larger-than-life elements in this area which include: a boatmaking yard provides visitors with the opportunity to design and build their own model watercraft which they can float; children can fish off the bridge along the dock or head to the waterplane to take a charter tour. Visitors can climb aboard the Missinaibi - the boat pictured on the dollar bill or explore the science and art of bubbles under a fanciful tent. This project will be realized in two phases. In the summer of 1997 a large, intricate canal system will be installed which will have visitors using their problem solving skills to engineer a route along a series of canals.

As part of the second phase of Adventure World, other sites will be added in 1997, and include the following: a Musical Odyssey where visitors will experiment with noise, sounds and music. Children will be introduced to African percussive instruments, and to sculptural components inspired by the musical traditions of Southeast Asia. The Digester Tower of the old E.B. Eddy plant will be a visual tribute to the imagination, decorated with whimsical, humorous graphics which will delight visitors of all ages and be a landmark of the park.

Adventure World is a perfect outdoor extension of the Children's Museum, whose mission is to enrich the existence and broaden the cultural experience of young visitors, while providing them with a creative environment. Adventure World offers young visitors an innovative new way to experience the Museum.
