The Spirit of Haida Gwaii -- Ninth Stamp in Canada Post Corporation's Masterpieces of Canadian Art SeriesHull, Quebec, May 1, 1996 -- Artist Bill Reid's magnificent sculpture, The Spirit of Haida Gwaii has been chosen as the artwork for the ninth stamp in Canada Post Corporation's Masterpieces of Canadian Art series. The stamp was unveiled during a ceremony held at the Canadian Embassy in Washington, where Reid's impressive black bronze sculpture is permanently installed. A plaster cast of the sculpture is also prominently displayed at the Canadian Museum of Civilization.
Collectors will be impressed by the stamp's beauty, which is based on a series of photographs of the original, taken at the Canadian Embassy in Washington by Harry Foster of the Museum. First-day covers - some autographed by Harry Foster - and other associated products, are available for sale in the Museum's Boutique.
