Record attendance: Museum extends hours for special exhibition

Gatineau, Quebec, January 9, 2004 - In response to unprecendented interest in Ancient Treasures and the Dead Sea Scrolls exhibition currently presented at the Canadian Museum of Civilization (CMCC), the exhibition will remain open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings until 7pm beginning Friday, January 16, 2004.

The Museum reached an all-time record for visitor attendance in December 2003. With 84,512 visitors - 20 per cent more than the previous record set in December 2002 - the past month has been the highest-attended December in the CMC's history.

"We are extremely pleased that people chose to visit our Museum in such overwhelming numbers this past month" said Dr. Victor Rabinovitch, President and CEO of the CMCC. "This is in part due to the interest in our excellent line-up of exhibitions, notably the Ancient Treasures and the Dead Sea Scrolls exhibition. Strong Canadian Children's Museum programming and IMAX(tm) Theatre presentations have also been big draws."

Two other special exhibitions on Canadian themes - Across Time and Tundra: The Inuvialuit of the Canadian Arctic and Presenza: A New Look at Italian-Canadian Heritage - have also been very popular with visitors during this period.

In conjunction with Ancient Treasures and the Dead Sea Scrolls, an outstanding lecture series will feature Biblical scholars and archaeological experts discussing the Dead Sea Scrolls and what they tell us about early Western religion and the Ancient Middle East. The eight lectures will be held in the Museum's Theatre every Thursday evening in February and March. Admission is free.
