King David: Legend or History? and the links between biblical texts and archaeology Gatineau, Quebec, February 20, 2004 - On Thursday February 26 at 6:30 p.m., the Canadian Museum of Civilization presents King David: Legend or History?, the fourth lecture in the series Understanding the Dead Sea Scrolls. Dr. Guy Couturier, member of the Royal Society of Canada and professor emeritus at the Université de Montréal, will look at the discovery of the Tel Dan inscription (the earliest reference to the House of David) and the links between biblical texts and archaeology.
Dr. Couturier is an internationally renowned orientalist and Old Testament specialist. His work relates directly to the archaeological and epigraphical discoveries in the Ancient Middle-East, which provide the context for any critical reading of the Hebrew Bible. His extensive research has been three-pronged: in linguistics, the comparison of Hebrew with the other Semitic languages; in archaeology, the study of the politics and the civil and religious institutions of ancient Israel; and in literature, the types and scope of the various literary forms used to transmit historical memory and religious beliefs.
It is recommended that those wishing to attend the lectures arrive early. The lectures are free, but tickets are required. Free tickets will be available in person only at the Museum Box Office starting at 4:30 p.m. the day of the lecture. First come, first served. There is no reserved or assigned seating. Please note that admission to the Museum is free every Thursday after 4 p.m.
King David: Legend or History? and related lectures by biblical scholars and archaeological experts are organized in conjunction with Ancient Treasures and the Dead Sea Scrolls, an exhibition of priceless archaeological discoveries from the Israel Museum, Jerusalem, that cover more than 1,000 years in the evolution of Judaism and early Christianity. The exhibition is presented at the Museum until April 12, 2004.
This lecture is presented in French with simultaneous translation into English.
Due to unprecedented interest in Ancient Treasures and the Dead Sea Scrolls, the exhibition will remain open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings until 7 p.m. Regular admission fees apply.
