Women in the Dead Sea Scrolls A look at their role in biblical times Gatineau, Quebec, March 4, 2004 — On Thursday, March 11, at 6:30 p.m., the Canadian Museum of Civilization presents Women in the Dead Sea Scrolls, the sixth lecture in the series Understanding the Dead Sea Scrolls. Join Dr. Eileen Schuller, Professor of Religious Studies at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, for a fascinating look at the role of women in Qumran.
Dr. Schuller, one of the world's foremost authorities on the Dead Sea Scrolls, has a Ph.D. in Near East Languages and Civilizations from Harvard University and has been involved in editing and publishing the Dead Sea Scrolls since the early 1980s. In recent years, her research and graduate teaching have been in the area of Judaism in the Second Temple period, with a special focus on the Dead Sea Scrolls and topics related to women. In her presentation, Dr. Schuller will explore passages from the Dead Sea Scrolls that shed light on women and their lives.
The lecture is free, but tickets are required. Free tickets will be available in person only at the Museum Box Office starting at 4:30 p.m. the day of the lecture. First come, first served. There is no reserved or assigned seating. It is recommended that those wishing to attend arrive early. Please note that admission to the Museum is free every Thursday after 4:00 p.m.
Women in the Dead Sea Scrolls and related lectures by biblical scholars and archaeological experts are organized in conjunction with Ancient Treasures and the Dead Sea Scrolls, an exhibition of priceless archaeological discoveries from the Israel Museum, Jerusalem, that cover more than 1,000 years in the evolution of Judaism and early Christianity. The exhibition is presented at the Museum until April 12, 2004.
This lecture is presented in English with simultaneous translation into French.
Due to unprecedented interest in Ancient Treasures and the Dead Sea Scrolls, the exhibition will remain open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings until 7:00 p.m. Regular admission fees apply.
