Six million visitors to Canadian Children’s Museum

Gatineau, Quebec, March 18, 2004 – This morning at about 10:30 a.m., the Canadian Children’s Museum, part of the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Gatineau, Quebec, heralded the 6 millionth visitor as she entered the Museum’s colourful, cosmopolitan world of exhibitions and discovery. Nine-year-old Susan Jimenez-Perez, from Ottawa, was the timely and lucky young museum-goer to make history at the popular museum that attracts nearly a half-million visitors each year.

Susan came to the Museum with her family for a day of fun and enrichment during March Break. She had planned to travel around the Museum’s spectacular, activity-filled International Village, but did not expect that her visit would turn into such a special occasion.

As the 6 millionth visitor, Susan was presented with a balloon crown that she wore proudly during the festivities. She also received a special gift box from the Museum containing a Canadian Children’s Museum sweatshirt, a hat and a family membership to the Canadian Museum of Civilization, of which the Children’s Museum is a part. About 100 children enjoyed cake, juice and the clowning antics of local performer Jesse Dryden. Other visitors during the day also received a small toy to remind them of this momentous occasion.

Nearly 500,000 people have visited the Canadian Children’s Museum each year since it opened in 1989. The Museum includes an International Village that features houses and streetscapes from countries around the globe. In this marvellous permanent exhibition space, lively activities and workshops invite children to make important discoveries about the world around them. Ideal for children up to 14 years of age and especially designed to create enriching family experiences, the Canadian Children’s Museum is one of the most visited parts of the Canadian Museum of Civilization.
