Top Speed — What It Takes To Be The Fastest In The World!

Gatineau, Quebec, March 24, 2004 — Hang on tight. From the cockpit of a GT racecar, you are about to careen through a death-defying turn at 200 mph. On a hushed track, you explode from the blocks in a sprint that launches you into human-powered propulsion. Balanced on a mountain bike atop a plunging cliff, you hang on for the ultimate downhill descent of your life. Focus, power, and acceleration beyond your wildest dreams — it’s all done in the name of chasing the absolute limits of human speed. Starting April 1, 2004, the Canadian Museum of Civilization’s IMAX Theatre will be presenting Top Speed on the IMAX Screen.

Using the world’s largest film format IMAX theatre technology, Top Speed enters the lives of four uncommonly fast individuals who take daring risks, go to new extremes and push the science of performance beyond the limits in their neverending pursuit of ultimate velocity. Among them are five-time Olympic medallist Marion Jones, mountain-biking champ Marla Streb, rising racecar sensation Lucas Luhr and high-performance car designer Stephen Murkett. Audiences will also meet blind eleven-year-old junior bobsledder, Blaise Bryant, who dreams of one day racing in the Olympics.

To probe the creation of fast motion, Top Speed divides the science of speed into three categories: Body, Mind and Heart. In the Body section, the film explores how the physiology of muscles, the manufacturing of energy in the cells, the volume of the lungs and the specificity of physical training add up to high-level performances. In the Mind section, Top Speed explains how athletes hone mental focus, come up with intelligent solutions to problems, as well as how designers and engineers use brainpower to invent and design faster machines. Most elusive and mysterious is the Heart category, which explores such subtle but powerful concepts as the will to win and the ability to keep fear at bay.

Top Speed is a high-adrenaline production from MacGillivray Freeman’s Films. Hosted by Tim Allen and set to a soaring orchestral score by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Top Speed will be featured at the Canadian Museum of Civilization’s IMAX Theatre starting April 1, 2004 and will be presented in conjunction with Ghosts of the Abyss.
