Abstract

A Passion for the Past presents a collection of 22 articles celebrating the late Lieutenant-Colonel James F. Pendergast, Hon.D.Sc., who passed away in 2000. Although not formally trained as an archaeologist, Jim Pendergast’s prolific output and attention to detail serves as a model for those genuinely interested in the study of archaeology and early Canadian history. The book’s contributors were eager to participate in this work, which has been published in the continuing series of scholarly monographs which Jim helped launch more than 30 years ago. The Mercury Series, which features works on archaeology, cultural history, ethnology and more, continues to be a major outlet for Canadian archaeological information.

The topics covered in this volume examine a wide range of subject matter. Several articles focus on a subject dear to Jim Pendergast’s heart: the St. Lawrence Iroquoians. His interests, however, were not limited to that group, but also encompassed an ever-widening scope of information that has helped researchers, either directly or indirectly, to understand this historically ephemeral people.

This book includes regional archaeological syntheses, palaeo-botanical and physical anthropological analyses, theoretical discussions of the nature of archaeological ethnicity, thoughts on the protohistoric period, linguistics, numismatics, symbolism and cosmology, Native perspectives on archaeology, collections management issues, biographies, and even an original contribution by a late-nineteenth-century archaeologist.

James F. Pendergast possessed the one characteristic that is absolutely essential for anyone entertaining the notion of devoting a significant portion of his or her life to scientific inquiry: a passion to learn. All of the papers contained in this festschrift reflect Pendergast’s mantra of “data collection, analysis and dissemination”. It is thus fitting that this memorial to James F. Pendergast attests both to his passion for archaeology, and to his steadfast commitment to its rigorous undertaking.
