Exhibition Presenza - A New Look at Italian Canadian Heritage subject of keynote address at Ottawa conference Gatineau, Quebec, May 7, 2004 - Dr. Mauro Peressini, Curator at the Canadian Museum of Civilization, will give a keynote presentation at a conference - From Emigrante to Canadese: The Italian Canadian Project - to be held May 14 to 16, 2004, in Ottawa, at the National Library of Canada. Dr. Peressini will discuss the research and development of the exhibition Presenza - A New Look at Italian Canadian Heritage, on display at the Museum until September 6, 2004.
Presenza - A New Look at Italian Canadian Heritage is the first major national exhibition on the heritage and the day-today lives of Italian Canadians. Presenza gives voice to the generation of Italian-Canadian immigrants from across the country using interviews and objects gathered by the Museum. Presenza focuses on the traditions, values and skills that contribute to this community’s rich social, spiritual and working life and shows how they are increasingly relevant to newer generations of Canadians.
“Immigrants from Italy brought traditions, skills and beliefs with them that influence the lives of Italian-Canadians and other Canadians today,” said Dr. Peressini, Curator of Southwest European and Latin America at the Museum. “The exhibition Presenza presents some of the traditions and values brought to Canada by Italian-Canadian immigrants. My presentation will discuss the process and choices that give shape to this exhibition.”
The exhibition Presenza: A New Look at Italian-Canadian Heritage is presented by Saputo Inc., with additional support from OMNI Television, the National Bank of Canada and the Ottawa Citizen.
