This summer, Dream, Wonder, Imagine at the Canadian Children’s Museum

Gatineau, Quebec, May 20, 2004 — On Saturday, May 22, 2004 an exciting interactive exhibition entitled Dream, Wonder, Imagine opens at the Canadian Children’s Museum, part of the Canadian Museum of Civilization. Dream, Wonder, Imagine will shift the natural creativity of young visitors into high gear this summer.

Dream, Wonder, Imagine aims to bring out the artist in every child by calling forth their skills — and especially their imagination — in a series of interactive creativity stations. Dream, Wonder, Imagine gets kids playing with artistic materials, tools, techniques and concepts in a way that will open up their world to art and, more importantly, fire up their creative imaginations.

Dream, Wonder, Imagine transforms the Kaleidoscope Gallery (the Canadian Children’s Museum special exhibition space) into an elaborate studio where children can exercise their hands, minds and social skills to learn more about art, the world and themselves. Children are sure to enjoy the art-inspired activities that will help develop their creative thinking and problem-solving abilities.

Back by popular demand, this exhibition is designed as a series of spaces where kids can explore various aspects of art and create their own masterpieces. In one area, for example, children can act as an artist’s model, climbing on to a pedestal and becoming a statue for other children to sculpt. Then, the models change places with the artists to design their own sculptures out of modelling clay.

In another area, children can handle mysterious objects hidden in boxes, identify them only through their sense of touch and then draw them. Other activities invite children to use shapes and pieces inspired by textile designs to tell a story; to create a sculpture out of sound; to depict, in the style of certain Renaissance paintings, a person composed entirely of fruits and vegetables; or literally to “enter” into a painting by becoming a character in a tableau with the help of props and costumes.

Through this exhibition, children can experience that being creative opens up a huge range of options, and that each person has a unique contribution to make. Working together, children use a simple line to create a drawing and, through the unique artwork produced by hundreds of kids starting from the same place, they discover that the possibilities are endless.

The launch of Dream, Wonder, Imagine coincides with a three-day weekend of special events. Saturday, May 22, is the date for both the annual opening of Adventure World, the Canadian Children’s Museum outdoor exhibition and play area, as well as the annual — and very popular — Mad Hatter’s Tea Party from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Art is the order of the day on Sunday, May 23, and Victoria Day Monday, May 24, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with guest artists leading exciting activities and some special take-home gifts for all participants (while supplies last).

Dream, Wonder, Imagine will be presented from May 22 until September 6, 2004 at the Canadian Children’s Museum in Gatineau, Quebec. The exhibition will be accompanied by an array of innovative programming throughout its run.
