Critical Care: On the Battlefield and Around the World

Ottawa, Ontario, June 30, 2004 — Critical Care: On the Battlefield and Around the World opens today at the Canadian War Museum (CWM). This exhibition, presented in partnership with the Department of National Defence (Canadian Forces Health Services, CFHS), showcases innovative Canadian contributions to military medicine, on the battlefield and on the homefront, over the last hundred years. Critical Care is the Canadian War Museum’s major summer exhibition, and is a must see for all.

"Critical Care takes a look at the men and women behind military medical technology, and tells compelling stories from wartime battlefields and peacekeeping missions. It reveals a very human aspect of conflict," said Joe Geurts, Director and CEO at the Canadian War Museum.

"Medical support is a vital part of any military. Over the past century, Canada's military medical service has grown to today’s comprehensive Canadian Forces Health Services (CFHS), which now includes dentistry, social workers, physiotherapists, as well as a wide range of professional health care providers. This exhibition will demonstrate how the men and women of the Canadian Forces Medical Service, and those of the CFHS, have played a very important role in Canada's military history," said Col. Scott Cameron, CF Surgeon General.

Featuring an outdoor display and an indoor exhibition, Critical Care will challenge visitors to imagine the realities of medical operations outside the familiar confines of civilian hospitals and clinics.

On the General Motors Courtyard visitors will meet serving CFHS personnel, who will be on hand to share their recent experiences and demonstrate equipment used in current military operations. Visitors will discover what a military dentist’s office is like, how aeromedical evacuations are carried out, and what is involved in current diving medical technology. Repeat visits are a must since the components of the outdoor display will change regularly over the summer.

The outdoor component featuring equipment and personnel will be linked to an indoor exhibition of photographs and text. This eye-catching exhibition on the Third Floor Gallery will tell the story of advances in medical technology over the last hundred years, including the two World Wars and the Korean War, up to the present day NATO-led operations in Afghanistan.

Critical Care: On the Battlefield and Around the World is proudly presented by the Canadian War Museum in partnership with the Department of National Defence. The exhibition is displayed in two spaces at the Museum: the Third Floor Gallery and the exterior General Motors Courtyard. Admission is free to the outdoor interactive exhibition, which runs from June 29 to September 6, 2004.

The Museum is open to the public seven days a week from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and until 8:00 p.m. on Thursdays. Admission is free to all on Thursdays from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and half-price all day on Sundays. Throughout the Labour Day weekend, the Museum will be celebrating the closure of the Sussex Drive location, whose doors permanently close to the public on September 6, 2004. The new Museum is set to open on LeBreton Flats in May 2005.
