Mark O'Neill named Vice-President, Public Affairs and Publishing of the Canadian Museum of Civilization Corporation


Gatineau, Quebec, August 16, 2004 - Mr. Mark O'Neill has been named Vice-President of Public Affairs and Publishing at the Canadian Museum of Civilization Corporation (CMCC). Mr. O'Neill has been acting in the position since October 2003, as well as working as Corporate Secretary and Director of Strategic Planning, a position he has held since arriving at the CMCC on September 24, 2001.

Mr. O'Neill will lead a team of professionals working to ensure that Canadians continue to be proud and excited about two of Canada's primary cultural institutions: the Canadian Museum of Civilization and the Canadian War Museum. In his role as Corporate Secretary and Director of Strategic Planning, he will continue to work closely with the CMCC Board of Trustees and the President and Chief Executive Officer.

Since joining the federal public service in 1986, Mr. O'Neill has worked for the Departments of the Secretary of State of Canada, Multiculturalism and Citizenship, Justice Canada and Canadian Heritage. His experience includes policy development and program delivery in the areas of multiculturalism, the Canadian publishing sector, museums and other related heritage institutions. Most recently, he has served as Director of Cultural Property for the Department of Canadian Heritage and as Secretary of the Canadian Cultural Property Export Review Board.

"I know that Mark's demonstrated knowledge and commitment to the Museums, his expertise in Canadian cultural and museum policy as well as his managerial capabilities will allow him to make an important contribution to the Corporation and the public we serve," said Dr. Victor Rabinovitch, President and Chief Executive Officer of the CMCC.

A native of Toronto, Mr. O'Neill grew up in Ottawa and attended Carleton University, where he studied political science and Canadian studies. Throughout his life, he has been active in a variety of community services, particularly in the area of emergency health care. He has also worked to serve constituents at the municipal level of government. Mr. O'Neill is married and has two children.
