Last chance to See the Exhibition Presenza: A New Look at Italian-Canadian Heritage Gatineau, Quebec, August 25, 2004 - Following a successful 15-month run at the Canadian Museum of Civilization, Presenza: A New Look at Italian-Canadian Heritage - the largest-ever exhibition on the heritage of Italian Canadians - will close on September 6, 2004.
Seen by 250,000 visitors since it opened in June 2003, the exhibition features more than 300 artifacts from across the country. Highlights include traditional clothing and kitchenware, works in metal, wood and ceramic, embroidered linens, folk art, an ornate Sicilian cart, a Venetian gondola, a lovingly restored Fiat Topolino, and many decorative and everyday objects.
Between 1880 and the 1970s, some 650,000 Italians came to Canada, where they formed highly visible communities in many major cities. Presenza looks at the values, skills and traditions that a generation of Italian immigrants brought to Canada, and shows how relevant these are for new generations of Canadians. The exhibition also features a set of evocative scenes that use artifacts, videotaped interviews and even fictional characters to dramatize encounters between Italian Canadians and their fellow citizens.
The exhibition received generous financial assistance from Saputo Inc. Additional support was provided by the following sponsors: OMNI Television, the National Bank of Canada and the Ottawa Citizen. Presenza: A New Look at Italian-Canadian Heritage will be presented at the Canadian Museum of Civilization until September 6, 2004.
