Autumn Splendour - A Celebration of Ohara Ikebana at the Canadian Museum of Civilization Gatineau, Quebec, September 20, 2004 - On Thursday September 30, at 7:00 p.m., join us at the Canadian Museum of Civilization for Autumn Splendour - A Celebration of Ohara Ikebana, and discover the Japanese art of combining flowers and plants to create arrangements that bring serenity to the soul.
Ikebana is one of Japan's traditional arts and it has been practiced for more than six hundred years. Initially developed from the Buddhist ritual of offering flowers to the spirits of the dead, it later became an art form with strong symbolic and philosophical overtones that are independent of its religious origins. Differing from other decorative approaches, the use of "empty" space and asymmetrical form in Ikebana are essential features, creating a sense of harmony among the materials, the container and the setting.
Professor Ko Morishita, assisted by professor Takumi Ito, will create 12 arrangements covering a wide variety of styles and forms from the Ohara School. For the demonstration, they will use flowers, branches and grasses available locally.
