An exceptional start to 2003 for the Canadian Museum of Civilization
Gatineau, Quebec, May 13, 2003 – The Canadian Museum of Civilization (CMC) is pleased to announce that it had a record number of visitors during the first quarter of 2003. Last year was also highly successful.
Despite the climate of instability the world has known over the past few months, and its effect on tourism in Canada, the CMC had a very good year, with one of the highest levels of attendance since its opening. The Museum received about 1,387,000 visitors from April 2002 to March 2003, the second-best year in its history.
“Our exceptional rate of attendance is a reflection of the CMC’s rich programming and the quality of exhibitions like The Mysterious Bog People and the First Peoples Hall, which captured the interest of the public,” remarked Canadian Museum of Civilization Corporation President Victor Rabinovitch.
“Our Museum, which would take two full days to visit from top to bottom, attracts guests from all over. The majority of them are Canadians from outside the national capital region, followed by tourists from abroad and visitors from the region. It continues to appeal to every age group,” added Mr. Rabinovitch.
The Corporation’s Web site, www.civilization.ca, was also exceptionally popular. No fewer than 4.4 million Internet users accessed the site, viewing about 28 million pages. This is by far the largest number of users since the site was created in 1994, and represents a significant increase over the previous year. From April 2001 to March 2002, 3.3 million Internet users visited the site.
Another very satisfying figure: the popular exhibition The Mysterious Bog People will soon welcome its 150,000th visitor. According to Mr. Rabinovitch, “This success is especially unusual for an exhibition at this time of year.”
