Mongolian Morin Khuur Orchestra Free Concert at the Canadian Museum of Civilization October 16 - 7:00 p.m. Gatineau, Quebec, October 6, 2003 - The Canadian Museum of Civilization and the Embassy of Mongolia invite the public to the Canadian debut performance of the Morin Khuur Orchestra from Mongolia on Thursday, October 16, 2003 at 7:00 p.m. in the Grand Hall of the Canadian Museum of Civilization. Admission is free.
The breathtaking music of the Morin Khuur Orchestra evokes the powerful spirit of Mongolia's fabled history and its vast steppe. Twenty virtuoso musicians, the renowned Khoomi throat singers, Mongolian traditional dancers and a contortionist will perform folk songs and contemporary music from the legendary land of Genghis Khan.
Morin Khuur means Horse Fiddle, an ancient musical instrument from Mongolia that blends the rich sounds of a cello with the finesse and complexity of a violin. The morin khuur, or horse fiddle, has only two strings made of specially selected and processed horsetail hairs, but its range is wide enough to play works from world classical music. It is considered the national instrument of Mongolia, harking back centuries to the roots of a nomadic culture based on horses and horse breeding.
For more information, the public can call the Mongolian Embassy at (613) 569-3830 or the Canadian Museum of Civilization at 776-7000 or 1-800-555-5621.
