November 8 and 9 at the Canadian Museum of CivilizationExperience the Spirit of the Inuvialuit with the Mackenzie Delta Drummers and Dancers Gatineau, Quebec, November 3, 2003 - During the weekend of November 8 and 9, visitors to the Canadian Museum of Civilization will be entranced by the sounds of the Mackenzie Delta Drummers and Dancers, a troupe of Inuvialuit dancers and singers. To the spellbinding rhythm of their drums, they will perform ancestral dances and songs of the Inuvialuit, a people of the Western Canadian Arctic. Following each performance, members of the troupe will take questions from the audience.
The Mackenzie Delta Drummers and Dancers are among a number of performing groups which have revived the traditional art of drum dancing in recent years - an art which all but disappeared during the twentieth century. The Inuvialuit have long used this rhythmical dance form to pass on legends, stories and traditions from generation to generation.
The Mackenzie Delta Drummers and Dancers will be performing in conjunction with two new exhibitions at the Canadian Museum of Civilization: Across Time and Tundra: The Inuvialuit of the Canadian Arctic, on display from November 7, 2003 to January 9, 2005, and Holman: Forty Years of Graphic Art, presented from October 31, 2003 to February 15, 2004.
