Reservation X: Aboriginal Contemporary Artists Summon Powers of Place and Community in Haunting Exhibition

Hull, Quebec, November, 1997 — The inspirational powers that Aboriginal contemporary artists draw from their community environment are dramatically embodied in an exciting exhibition, Reservation X, opening April 23, 1998 at the Canadian Museum of Civilization (CMC) in Hull, Quebec. The CMC invited eight Aboriginal artists from across Canada and the United States to participate in this exhibition, a sensitive and passionate exploration of the complex interplay of identity and community.

Reservation X will be one of the inaugural exhibitions featured in the First Peoples Hall, the Museum's dynamic new space dedicated to presenting the living reality of First Peoples in contemporary society. Its vast interior makes the First Peoples Hall the equal of many museums throughout North America — a fitting showcase for the rich diversity of First Peoples cultures.

"The Canadian Museum of Civilization is delighted to present Reservation X, an outstanding collection of installations by eight Aboriginal contemporary artists from across Canada and the United States. These artists do us the honour of portraying the deep bonds they feel with their own communities, enabling us to participate imaginatively in the intensity of their individual experience of what home means," said Dr. George MacDonald, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Canadian Museum of Civilization Corporation.

The eight artists participating in Reservation X are Faye HeavyShield of the Blood Indian Reserve in Alberta; Mary Longman of the Gordon Indian Reserve in Saskatchewan; Shelley Niro, Mohawk of the Six Nations Reserve, born at Niagara Falls, New York; Marianne Nicolson of Kingcome Inlet, British Columbia; C. Maxx Stevens, Seminole of Oklahoma; Nora Naranjo-Morse, Tewa of Santa Clara Pueblo, New Mexico; Mateo Romero of Cochiti Pueblo, New Mexico; and Jolene Rickard of the Tuscarora Nation in New York State.

Reservation X will be on display at the Canadian Museum of Civilization in the First Peoples Hall from April 23, 1998 to March 7, 1999.
