Lifelines exhibition wins 2002 top award from Canadian Museums Association Hull, Quebec, May 8, 2002 - On May 1, the Canadian Museums Association presented an Outstanding Achievement Award to the institutions that developed Lifelines: Canada’s East Coast Fisheries, an exhibition presented at the Canadian Museum of Civilization (CMC) from April 2001 to February 2002. Lifelines was jointly created by the CMC, the Newfoundland Museum, the New Brunswick Museum and the P.E.I. Museum and Heritage Foundation. The awards ceremony was held in Calgary, Alberta during the CMA annual conference.
In over 10 months at the CMC, Lifelines was seen by just over 197,000 visitors. It is the largest and most detailed exhibition on fisheries ever designed by Canadian museums and consists of six exhibitions, which can each be presented independently, covering 11,000 years of Aboriginal fishery, European fisheries from 1497 to 1763, sealing and whaling, daily life in Newfoundland’s outport fishing communities, the lobster fishery on Prince Edward Island, and sport fishing in New Brunswick.
The exhibits within Lifelines were curated by Dr. Peter Rider, Atlantic Provinces Historian, CMC; Walter Peddle, Curator of History, Newfoundland Museum; Gary Hughes, Curator of History and Technology, New Brunswick Museum; Boyde Beck, Curator, P.E.I. Museum and Heritage Foundation; Dr. David Keenlyside, Curator of Atlantic Provinces Archaeology, CMC; and Jean-Pierre Chrestien, Head of Historical Archaeology, CMC. The CMA award was accepted by Mr. Hughes on behalf of the four institutions.
The award recognized Lifelines’ unique partnership among large and small, federal and provincial museums. The CMA’s annual programme of awards identifies, recognizes, publicizes and encourages outstanding achievement in Canadian museums.
The six exhibitions that make up Lifelines will now embark on a three-year tour to museums in Atlantic Canada.
