Evening Performance by the Icelandic Saga Singers at the Canadian Museum of Civilization

Gatineau, Quebec, July 30, 2002 Celebrate the spirit of the Viking Age. The Canadian Museum of Civilization invites you to attend Gunnar the Hero, a musical comedy based on a popular Viking saga. Nine performers descended from the saga characters and still living in Iceland today have come to Canada for this special presentation, in English, at the CMC. With songs, storytelling and piano, they recreate a world of Viking poetry set to music.

Thursday, August 1 and Friday, August 2, 2002
at 7 p.m. in the Theatre
Admission is free.

This poetic tradition was introduced in Iceland by the Vikings and has been passed down for generations. Hear their descendants perform an enchanting musical, based on the lives of two Viking heroes Njal and Gunnar. These true friends through thick and thin are the main characters in one of the most famous Viking sagas, The Burning of Njal.

Arthur Björgvin Bollason, a popular television personality in Iceland, plays the narrator and adds a touch of humour as a comic monk. Adults and children alike are sure to enjoy this one-hour program. If you think the Vikings were just horned-helmeted warriors, you are in for a surprise.

Sponsored by the Embassy of Iceland and Icelandair.
