Canadian Museum of Civilization's Mysterious Bog People chosen one of North America’s Top 100 events in 2003

Gatineau, Quebec, October 3, 2002 — The Canadian Museum of Civilization is very pleased by this week’s announcement that The Mysterious Bog People, its major exhibition in 2003, has been selected as one of the Top 100 events in North America during the coming year by the American Bus Association (ABA).

This prestigious honour was announced earlier this week by the Ottawa Tourism and Convention Authority (OTCA). As a tourism industry leader, the American Bus Association selects 100 events to recommend each year in the United States and Canada. This prestigious list includes festivals, exhibitions, fairs and more.

“The Museum strives to present exhibitions with high-quality content on exciting subjects,” said Dr. Victor Rabinovitch, President and CEO of the Canadian Museum of Civilization. “Such recognition by the tourism industry is an endorsement of our approach. Year-round, visitors from outside Ottawa and from international locations make up the majority of our visitors. They tell us repeatedly how much they enjoy this Museum and how highly it ranks among attractions they want to see in our region.”

“Once again, the Canadian Museum of Civilization delivers a world-class and innovative exhibition with The Mysterious Bog People,” said Keith de Bellefeuille Percy, President of the OTCA. “This kind of industry recognition confirms that Ottawa is a leading tourist destination for the travel trade market.”

To be presented at the Canadian Museum of Civilization from December 6, 2002 to September 1, 2003, The Mysterious Bog People is the first-ever international exhibition tour of important archaeological finds discovered in European bogs.

Not only is it the first time that important bog finds have been brought together on such a major scale, but it is also the most extensive international endeavour ever undertaken by the partner museums. The exhibition is a joint effort of the Niedersächsisches Landesmuseum in Hanover, Germany, the Canadian Museum of Civilization, the Glenbow Museum in Calgary, Alberta and the Drents Museum in Assen, The Netherlands.

Presented by Aim Funds Management Inc., The Mysterious Bog People tells the 10,000-year story of those who lived near the bogs of northwestern Europe. It will reveal the fascinating story of these early people who, in rituals that remain shrouded in mystery, sacrificed their most valuable objects — including mummies — in sacred bogs.
