CMCC WEB SITE ATTRACTS MORE THAN 150,000 VIRTUAL VISITS TO THE "MUSEUM WITHOUT WALLS"

Hull, Quebec, December 14, 1995 — There have been more than 150,000 visits to the Canadian Museum of Civilization Corporation (CMCC) World Wide Web (WWW) site since its inception just one year ago. On the occasion of this anniversary, the CMCC is expanding and improving its WWW services with the addition of upgraded technology and new activities.

"The overwhelming success of this site represents a milestone in our ultimate goal of becoming a Museum for the Global Village," says Dr. George MacDonald, President and CEO of the CMCC. "Through improved technology and expanded interactive imagemaps, WWW users have greater access to detailed multimedia information concerning the Museum's collections, exhibitions and research, and will soon be able to electronically purchase items from our new Cyberboutique, and to sponsor Museum treasures through our online auction."

The first year of the CMCC's site featured more than 1,400 screens of visual representations and factual information on exhibitions, collections, the Canadian War Museum, the National Postal Museum and the Children's Museum. The CMCC's improved WWW services represent another step in the institution's goal of providing information on Canadian heritage and culture to national and international audiences.

One of the new services soon to be launched will be the Cyberboutique ( http://cyberboutique.civilization.ca/ ). This online service will offer unique, high-quality Museum products, for sale through the Internet in the following categories: Native Products, Canadiana, Just for Kids, World Cultures, Museum Souvenirs and Military Memorabilia. More information regarding the Cyberboutique will become available soon.

Another new development is the Sponsor a Treasure online auction. In this period of reduced government resources, the Museum is developing innovative methods of fund-raising, including this auction of Canadian treasures from the Museum's vast collections.

Starting December 14, the CMCC will present a weekly listing of curatorial-board-selected treasures on the Web site's New on the Block page. Visitors to the site will then be offered an opportunity to place their online bid for sponsorship of the treasure. Bidders are invited to continue participating in the bidding process throughout the four-week period during which each treasure is available. As part of their sponsorship benefits, winning bidders will be publicly acknowledged when the artifacts they sponsor are exhibited, featured in published works or provided for loan during the five-year sponsorship period.

"We are very pleased with these new developments," concluded Dr. MacDonald, "and look forward to contributing high-quality cultural content to the ever-developing Information Highway."
