Come Face-to-Face with the Lions of the Kalahari

June 14, 2004 — Gatineau (Quebec) — This summer, the Canadian Museum of Civilization’s IMAX Theatre will host the lions of the Kalahari! Roar: Lions of the Kalahari is a production of National Geographic and Tim Liversedge Productions and will open to the public on July 1. This remarkable film transports audiences into the heart of Africa, where they’ll experience the challenges faced by these noble creatures each day, as they struggle to preserve their territory.

An epic story of power and dominance, success and failure, Roar was filmed in the stark expanse of Botswana’s Kalahari Desert. Famed African filmmaker and Golden Panda award-winner Tim Liversedge — who also served as the film’s director, producer and cinematographer — has more than 40 years’ experience in Botswana. This enables him to bring audiences an unparalleled look at the natural behaviour of lions, their prey, and the incredible profusion of life which congregates at the only water source within a 160-kilometre radius. Balancing suspense and action with insightful information, Liversedge delivers a passionate film that will thrill audiences of all ages.

Filmed entirely in the wild, Roar: Lions of the Kalahari carries the audience deep into Botswana’s Kalahari Desert, where a life-and-death struggle unfolds between a real lion king and a fierce, young contender for the throne. Viewers are shaken in their seats by one of nature’s loudest sounds — the roars of duelling lions — delivered by the most powerful theatre sound-system in the world.

The drama poignantly weaves together the day-to-day life of lions with the suspense of rivalry. Here, one of the largest lions to walk the arid lands of the Kalahari — a 10-foot-long giant — reigns with his lionesses and cubs until a nomad comes to claim the territory for his own.

Starting July 1, Roar: Lions of the Kalahari will be presented at the Canadian Museum of Civilization’s IMAX Theatre. It will be playing alongside the fastest film to ever hit the IMAX screen: Top Speed.
