Museum vows public access to the
Maurice « Rocket » Richard Collection
Gatineau, Quebec, May 7, 2002 - The Canadian Museum of Civilization expressed its intention today to work with other interested organizations to exhibit the 47 objects from the estate of Maurice « Rocket » Richard.
The Museum’s national role is to preserve objects of Canadian historical interest for future generations while also providing wide public access to its collection. The Maurice Richard objects include the legendary hockey champion’s Montreal Canadien’s jersey worn by the Rocket in 1959 when his team won the Stanley Cup. Another notable item acquired is the NHL Stanley Cup champion’s ring from the same playoffs.
“We are delighted that, with the help of the Department of Canadian Heritage, we will be able to conserve these wonderful objects for the enjoyment of Canadians for generations to come”, said Dr. Victor Rabinovitch, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Canadian Museum of Civilization Corporation.
“Maurice Rocket Richard is a legend,” commented Minister of Canadian Heritage, the Honourable Sheila Copps, “and I’m proud that we have been able to protect and honour his legacy by acquiring these objects for the national collection.”
Speaking on behalf of the Richard family, Maurice Richard Junior, stated: “This is truly an honour to the memory of Rocket Richard. My family is very happy that so many of his awards are staying home where they belong.
