Quebec government approves sale of 47 items from the Maurice Richard Collection to the Canadian Museum of Civilization

Gatineau, Quebec, July 22, 2002 — The Canadian Museum of Civilization (CMCC) has received confirmation that the Government of Quebec has approved the sale of 47 objects from the Maurice Richard Collection to the Museum. The approval was communicated in a letter from Quebec’s Minister of State for Culture and Communications, Diane Lemieux, to the President and CEO of the CMCC, Dr. Victor Rabinovitch.

“We are very pleased that the Government of Quebec has approved the sale of these unique objects to the Canadian Museum of Civilization,” stated Dr. Rabinovitch. “We are honoured that the Richard family agreed that the best way to preserve the Rocket’s artifacts for the enjoyment of all Canadians is to entrust them to the most visited museum in Canada. We also intend to explore ways in which we can work with interested groups, such as the Canadiens Hockey Club, to exhibit them to Canadians in different regions of the country”.

The Maurice Richard objects include the legendary hockey champion’s Montréal Canadiens’ No. 9 jersey, worn by the “Rocket” in 1959 when his team won the Stanley Cup as well as a game-worn jersey from the 1949 all-star game. Other notable items acquired include the NHL Stanley Cup champion’s ring from the same playoffs, hockey sticks, pucks, trophies and a painting.

The acquisition of the objects was made possible through the support of the Department of Canadian Heritage.
