The Maurice "Rocket" Richard CollectionA national treasure at the Canadian Museum of Civilization Gatineau, Quebec, December 10, 2002 — Fifteen items from the Maurice "Rocket" Richard Collection were unveiled to the media at the Canadian Museum of Civilization (CMC) today. The Museum announced that the collection, which it acquired earlier this year with funding from the federal Department of Canadian Heritage, will be showcased in an exhibition opening in early 2004.
As an unrivalled hockey star of the Montreal Canadiens, Maurice Richard became a symbol of strength and talent to an entire country. To French Canadians, in particular, he was a champion and a symbolic source of pride.
"Maurice Richard is a Canadian legend, and this collection is particularly significant to all of us," stated Dr. Victor Rabinovitch, President and CEO of the Canadian Museum of Civilization Corporation. "The Rocket's life and rise to heroic status were important episodes in Canada's history in the mid-twentieth century. We are honoured to have this collection, which we will soon be presenting to the general public."
"Maurice 'Rocket' Richard has become a symbol of Canada's national sport and an inspiration to millions across the country," said Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps. "His legacy extends beyond sport, and I am pleased that it will be preserved and shared with Canadians for generations to come."
The Maurice "Rocket" Richard Collection was acquired from an auction and includes 57 objects once owned by Richard, who passed away in the year 2000. The exhibition planned for early 2004 will present the items as treasures of sport within the context of a broader historical and cultural story that the collection tells. The CMC is currently developing sponsorship ideas to make this a travelling exhibition.
