Log cabin quilt top,
made about 1890, Yarmouth
Construction
Made with woolen fabrics, this quilt was never backed and finished. The
block is rather small, approximately 18 cm (7"). Log cabin quilts are
built up by sewing strips of fabric to a foundation cloth. To make a
block, work begins with a centre square. Each log is sewn to cover the
outer edge of the previous one. Light and dark fabrics produce effects of
sunshine and shadow. Various patterns can be created by arranging the
blocks. Many log cabin quilts were never quilted; some were tied.
