Crazy quilt
|
dated 1885, probably Wolfville, Kings County
Construction
Fine dress silks are attached to a backing with a wide variety of
embroidery stitches. The strawberry motifs in two corners use chenille
thread for a raised appearance. "Chenille", French for caterpillar,
describes the fuzzy appearance of the thread.
History
This is the finest example of a Victorian crazy quilt yet discovered in
Nova Scotia. In spite of much research trying to identify HLT, the maker
remains a mystery. The lace edge suggests that this crazy quilt may have
been made as a table cover.
