Wholecloth quilt
|
made about 1840,
by Mary E. (Irish) Symonds,
Falmouth, Hants County
Construction
The printed fabric may date from about 1830. It is said that this quilt
was made from four-poster bed hangings. It may also have been part of a
matching set of curtains and bedcover. Although decorative, the quilt
would have been made relatively quickly and easily; the quilting pattern
consists only of widely spaced crossed lines that form squares,
approximately 5 cm (2").
History
Mary Symonds (1775-1867) and four succeeding generations of her family
used this quilt.
