Embassy of Japan and the Japan Foundation present Hiroshi Hori Puppet Theatre at the Canadian Museum of Civilization Gatineau, Quebec, February 18, 2003 — The Embassy of Japan and the Japan Foundation, in collaboration with the Canadian Museum of Civilization, are pleased to present the Hiroshi Hori Puppet Theatre performing The Tale of Genji in the Theatre of the Canadian Museum of Civilization on Sunday, March 2, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. The presentation is in Japanese with English translation. This is the only performance in Canada by this acclaimed Japanese artist.
Hiroshi Hori is an innovative, talented puppeteer and performer. His puppets are life-sized creations which he designs and makes. His theatre work incorporates elements from other forms of drama, including Noh theatre, Kabuki, shingeki (“new theatre”) and opera. An accomplished dancer, Hori also includes dance elements in his puppet performances, giving them a fluidity and gracefulness not usually associated with puppets.
The presentation at the Canadian Museum of Civilization will include a puppet performance of AKASHI from The Tale of Genji, followed by the movie UKIFUNE from the same tale, for which Hori created 47 dolls. Mr. Hori will then deliver a lecture in which he will discuss the Juni-hito-e, the typical dress of Japanese court ladies during the Heian period
(794–1185). Each Juni-hito-e is made of 12 layers of cloth, and Mr. Hori will describe those he designed for the movie UKIFUNE from The Tale of Genji. The audience will be able to see Juni-hito-e modelled by members of Mr. Hori’s theatre company.
The performance will end with Hagoromo, a puppet Noh play about the rewards of trusting in others. In this part of the performance, Hori’s puppets combine perfectly with the elements of the Noh theatrical convention to present the audience with a unique and enjoyable theatrical experience.
Tickets for the Hiroshi Hori Puppet Theatre are $10 for adults, $7 for seniors and students. Tickets are available at the Canadian Museum of Civilization Box Office (in person only) and through Ticketmaster at (613) 755-1111.
