The Canadian Museum of Civilization celebrates the 10th anniversary of its Aboriginal Training Programme in Museum Practices

Gatineau, Quebec, April 16, 2003 — The Canadian Museum of Civilization is today celebrating the graduation of the tenth group of interns to take part in its Aboriginal Training Programme in Museum Practices (ATPMP).

Rose Alexis, Okanagan Nation (British Columbia), Robert First Charger, Kainai/Blood tribe (Alberta), Jason Bear, Cree Nation (Saskatchewan), and Réginald Flamand, Attikamek Nation (Quebec) are today completing their internships and receiving their diplomas from the hands of the Museum’s President and CEO, Dr. Victor Rabinovitch, and other members of the programme’s Steering Committee, in a ceremony held in the presence of friends, family and past participants.

“Over the years, many participants have brought back new knowledge and skills gained during their internships at the Canadian Museum of Civilization and have used them to pursue careers in regional and local museums in their own communities,” says Dr. Rabinovitch. “The Museum has also benefited from the interns’ participation, as it has permitted us to develop many positive long-term relationships.”

Since 1993, no fewer than 58 Aboriginal workers and students from across Canada have been ATPMP interns. The eight-month programme, established in response to recommendations contained in the 1992 report of the Task Force on Museums and First Peoples. Under the supervision of Museum professional staff, interns have acquired new skills in various fields such as research, conservation and interpretation.

As part of their training, participants create a special project. Today’s graduates are presenting an exhibit on the North American Indigenous Games, developed over the past eight months and sponsored by the National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation. This showcase exhibit can be seen in the Museum’s Southern Salon, just outside the First Peoples Hall.
