Weekend with a touch of Italy at the Canadian Museum of Civilization

Gatineau, Quebec, August 4, 2003 — In connection with the exhibition Presenza – A New Look at Italian-Canadian Heritage, the Canadian Museum of Civilization is bringing you a weekend filled with the music of Italy.

Sotto le Stelle – Under the Stars
August 8 – 7:30 pm
Grand Hall

An evening to remember! On the program of this café-style concert with cash bar: Neapolitan salsa fusion by the contemporary Italian-Canadian group Finaldi, and jazz/blues singer Selina Chiarelli.

For more than 30 years, Angelo FINALDI, the Montreal artist of Neapolitan origin, has been creating highly infectious music performed by Quebec’s top singers: Nanette WORKMAN, Diane DUFRESNE, Nicole MARTIN and more recently his own daughter, COCO.

Finaldi’s music is backed by the guitars and percussion of his friends from BLUES GITAN: Denis VIOLLETTI on guitar and vocals, Stéphane TELLIER on guitar, Kristin MOLNAR on violin, Roger CLOUTIER on percussion and singer Pascale COULOMBE for some of the numbers. They will be performing a varied repertoire influenced by Finaldi’s travels in the Americas. Traditional Italian melodies and modern songs will mingle to create an evening with a uniquely Mediterranean flavour.

Selina Chiarelli, daughter of well-known Toronto singer Charly Chiarelli, has performed to audiences in Montreal, Quebec City, Kingston, Toronto and Italy. She is known in Montreal for her participation in the Montreal Intercultural Choir and the Nuits d’Afrique festival.

Una Passeggiata – An Afternoon Stroll at the Museum
August 10 – 11:30 am to 6 pm
Grand Hall and Museum grounds

Come enjoy the voices of Montreal’s Coro Alpino performing folksongs in Italian, English and French. Their repertoire includes traditional Alpine songs celebrating the beauty of the mountains.

The Fisaorchestra Armonia from Treviso, Italy will also be on hand. Come see this group of thirty young accordionists in their Canadian debut performance.
