New exhibition opens the inspiring world of travel to children at the Canadian Children’s Museum Gatineau, Quebec, October 2, 2003 — The Canadian Children’s Museum at the Canadian Museum of Civilization is very pleased to announce the opening of Pack Your Bags! A Kid’s Ticket to Travel. This fun-filled exhibition will help children explore and understand why people travel and how travelling can change us.
Pack Your Bags! invites children and families to join in the exciting adventure of five very different kinds of travel: journeying to a new home, visiting new places, taking on new challenges, joining in a celebration, and taking imaginary trips to the destinations of our dreams.
The many engaging ideas, activities and special artifacts in Pack Your Bags! will encourage children to think about their own sense of identity and community. Capturing every aspect of the Museum’s mandate, this exhibition will enrich your children’s lives, broaden their cultural experience and give them a creative space in which to learn about the world.
Children will have lots of opportunity to learn about other cultures at the exhibition’s event-packed opening weekend celebration on October 4 and 5. Highlights of the weekend include a Chinese Lion Dance, a dance performance by the Sylvie Quintana Mexican Kids, and a chance to learn about customs from community guests in the Japanese, Indian, Mexican and Bedouin homes of the Museum’s International Village.
Children will be able to make their own “memory travel case” to hold their favourite memories of the day. There are also prizes to be won and a game, Where’s Mr. Bagg?, in which children help to find this lively imaginary traveller who has lost his way.
Other special activities include a salute to Mexico’s annual custom of remembrance on November 1 and 2. This special programme, developed in collaboration with the Embassy of Mexico, will feature intriguing paper-cutting and cooking workshops.
Pack Your Bags! A Kid’s Ticket to Travel is made possible through the generous support of Computer AssociatesTM. The exhibition will be at the Canadian Children’s Museum from October 4, 2003 to May 2, 2004.
