RELIVE MUSEUM'S NUNAVUT CELEBRATIONS ON THE WEB!

Hull, Quebec, April 21, 1999 — The Canadian Museum of Civilization in Hull, Quebec was the official southern site for festivities and ceremonies marking the creation of the new territory of Nunavut on April 1. Now the public can enjoy that special event on the Web by visiting the following address: www.civilization.ca/membrs/theatre/iqqaip1e.html

Special activities on Nunavut Day included the unveiling of the redrawn map of Canada to a rousing presentation of the Nunavut flag. Inuit performances of throat singing, drum dancing and ayaya singing, as well as demonstrations of traditional Inuit games, fascinated the nearly 4,000 people who came to the Museum that day. Visitors from the local Inuit community, diplomats, government officials and the general public also came to enjoy two exciting new Nunavut-related exhibitions that opened to the public that day: Iqqaipaa: Celebrating Inuit Art, 1948-1970, presented by Cancom, and Inuit and Englishmen: The Nunavut Voyages of Martin Frobisher.

Now video extracts of most of these special activities, including a guided tour of the Iqqaipaa exhibition by curator Maria von Finckenstein and special advisor James Houston, are available to all via the Internet. The Canadian Museum of Civilization was the first museum in Canada to Webcast an exhibition opening on March 30, 1999. The Museum is using new media technologies to share the exciting happenings within its walls with an ever-wider public.

Both live and archived Webcasts are an initiative of the Canadian Museum of Civilization with the collaboration and support of two leading technology companies in Ottawa: GAPC film and television services, which captured the events using state-of-the-art digital cameras, and Magma Communications Ltd., which provided the server and the Internet technology.

The Museum wishes to underline the important collaboration of three local Inuit organizations in providing the special Nunavut programming: Tungasuvvingat Inuit, Nunavut Sivuniksavut and the Pauktuutit Inuit Women's Association. The performance sponsor for Iqqaipaa is Air Canada.
