Trans Canada Trail Relay 2000 Commemorative Vase on Display at Canadian Museum of Civilization

Hull, Quebec, September 18, 2000 — This week, the Canadian Museum of Civilization (CMC) received the commemorative vase into which the waters of three oceans were poured during a ceremony held on Saturday, September 9 in Jacques Cartier Park to inaugurate the Trans Canada Trail.

Victor Rabinovitch, President and CEO of the CMC, was delighted to receive the vase from the Honourable Herb Gray during the ceremony. The large ceremonial container in aluminum is the work of Don Richards of British Columbia, and it reflects the form of the Trans Canada Trail logo.

In addition to the vase, other objects will be on display to present various aspects of this major project. Two large showcases will feature articles of clothing that composed the official uniform worn by 5,000 walkers. The three containers created by local craft artists for carrying the water from each ocean - a sealskin bag representing the North, a ladle and scoop created by the First Peoples of British Columbia and a hand-painted pail from the Atlantic region - will also be on view. Three leather-bound books filled with the signatures of mayors, First Nations chiefs and other leaders and dignitaries from more than 800 communities from one end of the country to the other will be available for viewing. As well, a map will allow visitors to follow the path of the Trans Canada Trail, and a video will provide the history of the project.

The Trans Canada Trail commemorative vase will be on view until September 9, 2001 next to the Main Lobby, across from the Imax®/Omnimax® Theatre, and members of the public will be able to view it without paying Museum admission.
