LEGOŽ Ocean Adventure: a new exhibition opens Saturday, December 9 at the Canadian Children's Museum

Hull, Quebec, December 5, 2000 — The LEGOŽ Ocean Adventure is a hands-on travelling museum exhibition for children, designed to spark their curiosity about the world's oceans and foster their appreciation of the fragile marine environment. Its next stop is the Canadian Children's Museum, located in the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Hull, Quebec, where it will open Saturday, December 9, 2000 with the building of a giant LEGOŽ octopus by LEGOŽ master builders and young visitors to the Museum.

OPENING DAY: Children and their families are invited to the Museum on Saturday, December 9, to help LEGOŽ master builders put together the world's largest LEGOŽ octopus, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the Marius Barbeau Salon. Then, kids can visit the exciting new exhibition LEGOŽ Ocean Adventure.

As children "dive" into an imaginary ocean environment, they are greeted by life-size LEGOŽ sharks, dolphins, sea turtles, colourful fish and other impressive LEGOŽ sculptures and creations. LEGOŽ model designers used 183,360 LEGOŽ pieces to construct the exhibition. Hands-on activities and unlimited play possibilities using LEGOŽ and LEGO DUPLOŽ brick are found in the four interactive stations; a LEGOŽ Research Submarine, Underwater Habitat, Rover Building Area and Creative Sea Creatures Station.
  • The Underwater Habitat shows how people would eat, sleep and work while living underwater. A kitchen, bathroom and sleeping area filled with LEGOŽ appliances and accessories allow children to role play before exiting the habitat via a yellow slide.
  • The Research Submarine sets the scene for discovering more about ocean animals. Whales are the subject of an interactive video and fact book. Two periscopes allow children to peer at the bottom of a LEGOŽ-filled ocean
  • The Underwater Rover area shows how scientists explore the ocean depths using unmanned rovers. Building tables invite children to construct their own rovers.
  • The Creative Sea Creatures Station showcases dolphins, sharks, sea turtles and more in a LEGOŽ coral reef environment. Children's imaginations are challenged to create their own creatures of the deep.
The LEGOŽ Ocean Adventure stimulates and teaches children by involving them in the activities of building, rearranging, experimenting and creating. Kids get all the more excited and engaged by the fact that they are using the perennial favourite building block - pieces of LEGOŽ.

The oceanic theme of the exhibition is designed to open up children's minds to new understanding about marine life and the undersea world. The U.S.-based National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) provided resources and expertise in the development of the exhibition. In particular, children can learn how sea turtles sleep, eat and travel through an interactive computer program based on an actual NOAA research project being conducted off the coast of Georgia.

The LEGOŽ Ocean Adventure was developed jointly by the Children's Museum of Indianapolis, the Youth Museum Exhibit Collaborative (of which the Canadian Children's Museum is a contributing member) and LEGOŽ Systems, Inc.

The exhibition is on display from December 9, 2000 until March 25, 2001 at the Canadian Children's Museum in Hull, Quebec.
