The Canadian Museum of Civilization Corporation Launches Unique Genealogical Web Site

Hull, Quebec, November 16, 2000 — As of today, a new genealogical site is available on the Virtual Museum of New France Web Site. Our Ancestors of European Origin: Genealogy and Family History will open a new window of information for anyone seeking to know more about their early European ancestors who settled in New France. This truly unique site is so far the only one combining genealogy, history and family history.

This Web site is the richest source of information available about the ancestors of many Canadians, with matrimonial data and historical documents about their place of origin. It also contains family histories written by reputed authors Hélène-Andrée Bizier and Jacques Lacoursière. The databases contain transcripts of original hand-written documents like marriage contracts and sales contracts, as well as illustrations relating to places of origin.

"This is the first genealogy site on the Web that contains such in-depth and rich genealogical and historical information about individuals who came to New France," said Victor Rabinovitch, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Canadian Museum of Civilization Corporation. "These databases are found on the Virtual Museum of New France (VMNF) Web site, which is now the world's primary Web reference for the history of New France and its residents' way of life. The virtual exhibition and activities in the VMNF currently attract over 500,000 visitors per year."

Genealogy has grown highly popular and accounts for 20 per cent of the entire contents of the Web. Thanks to the six databases in Our Ancestors of European Origin: Genealogy and Family History, and to the site's powerful search engine, visitors will be able to locate information about their first European ancestors who settled in New France. The site will become a dynamic and invaluable genealogical research tool for Web visitors. This is the first phase of the site, as it will become more complete over time.

Although there are minimal fees to consult the various documents, a dictionary and a map of France are available at no cost. Once a client has opened an account, the previously consulted information can be viewed without paying additional fees.

Our Ancestors of European Origin: Genealogy and Family History is produced by the Canadian Museum of Civilization Corporation's Museum of New France, in cooperation with Archiv-Histo, an organization devoted to the history of early Quebec and knowledge of its archives.

Our Ancestors of European Origin: Genealogy and Family History will be launched at the Salon du livre de Montréal, from November 16 to 20, at the Archiv-histo booth. The site can be found at the following address: www.vmnf.civilization.ca/vmnf/ancestors/
