Multimedia Versatility at the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Hull: Art, Technology and Education!

Hull, Quebec, January 21, 1997 — Just in time for the opening of the Canadian Cultural Centre in Paris, the Canadian Museum of Civilization (CMC) is extremely proud to present two major multimedia projects: the Pocket Museum® and the Virtual Museum of New France®.

Co-produced by Coscient Multimédia Inc. and the Canadian Museum of Civilization, the Pocket Museum® is one of the most remarkable pieces of software in the educational games category, winning as it did a Gold CD-ROM at the 1996 International Multimedia Market. "This CD-ROM was created to introduce the Museum to a new category of clientèle — young people. But its chief asset is that it allows us to bring art and people closer together, thereby extending the Museum's visibility beyond Canadian borders," explains Dr.George F. MacDonald, President and Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director of the Canadian Museum of Civilization Corporation (CMCC).

The Virtual Museum of New France® allows visitors to enter the first virtual universe devoted to New France — without a ticket. New France has left its mark all over the world. Now the signs reflecting its world-wide influence have been brought together in this museum/clearing house, providing visitors with a better understanding of the origins and evolution of North American francophonie by focusing on the historical, social and cultural heritage of the first two centuries of Canadian history. "This modern museum will maintain interactive relationships with its visitors. To stimulate public interest in the material relating to New France's history, several of its activities will be highly entertaining," adds Ms. Adrienne Clarkson, Chairwoman of the Canadian Museum of Civilization Corporation. It should be noted that France's Department of Culture is also one of the principal partners in the creation of this virtual museum.

The mandate of the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Hull, Quebec, is to instill in all Canadians a sense of common identity and shared heritage, while promoting an understanding of the diverse cultural groups that make up Canadian society. The Canadian Museum of Civilization Corporation includes the Canadian Museum of Civilization and its affiliate museums, the Canadian War Museum and the Museum of New France, which has created the only museum without walls in the world. The CMC complex also houses the Canadian Postal Museum, the Children's Museum and CINÉPLUS, the combined IMAX® and OMNIMAX® film theatre.

In today's information age, maintaining leadership in the communication of information has moved beyond mere challenge: it has come to mean institutional survival.
