Following chalk markings, the monks deposit coloured sand using a metal funnel called a chang-bu in Tibetan. The monks work outwards from the centre of the dul-tson-kyil-khor ("mandala of coloured powders"). There are many different mandalas, but this one is know as the Medicine Buddha. At the centre is a book, symbolic of the traditional teachings or dharma of Buddhism. This is surrounded by an eight-petal lotus.
