Canadian Museum of Civilization Wins Five Awards for Excellence at this year's American Association of Museums Annual Meeting

Hull, Quebec, May 20, 1998 — At last week's 93rd Annual Meeting of the American Association of Museums in Los Angeles, the Canadian Museum of Civilization (CMC) came away with five MUSE Awards for Excellence in media and technology — more than twice the number received by any other museum this year. "I've never been so embarrassed in my life," said a delighted Dr. George F. MacDonald, President and CEO of the Canadian Museum of Civilization Corporation. "I had to go to the podium five times to accept an award. That's never happened before in a single evening."

All of the awards were for media products and promotions produced by the CMC. In the Interactive Multimedia category, the CMC won silver for its Inuit: People under the Great Bear interactive CD-ROM. In the Museum Profiles category, the CMC took gold and silver for its Canadian Children's Museum promotional video and its History Comes Alive school programmes video, respectively. In the World Wide Web category, the CMC took silver and bronze for its Museum of New France and Pocket Museum websites.

"I cannot express how pleased I am at the number of awards we received this year," stated Dr. MacDonald. "We have always tried to remain in the forefront of electronic outreach as applied to museology, and we are glad to see that others recognize the value of these efforts. We will continue to work towards the ideal of a truly global village in our outreach activities, for we feel that, as a museum of human history, we have a unique opportunity to share the story of human civilization with audiences around the world."

In addition to last week's five MUSE awards for media products, the CMC has also received numerous awards over the past year for its exhibitions, educational programming, publications, promotional activities, design, and use of technology in a museological context.
