Egypt-Inspired Fashion Show at the Canadian Museum of Civilization

Sunday May 24 and Sunday June 14, 1998, 2:00 p.m. — Grand Hall - What's the well-dressed mummy wearing this year? The Canadian Museum of Civilization invites you to find out at a fashion show inspired by its new Mysteries of Egypt exhibition. Free with Museum admission.

First-year students from the Richard Robinson School of Fashion Design in Ottawa have created an entire collection of dazzling new fashions inspired by Egypt. Some revisit traditional Egyptian designs, evoking the mythic figures found on Egyptian tomb frescoes, or interpreting characters from different periods in ancient Egyptian history. Others take a decidedly futuristic approach, using the legacy and genius of Egyptian art and science to create designs inspired by archetypal symbols as diverse as mummies, hieroglyphs and pyramids.

The brainchild of Richard Robinson instructor Nicole Geoffroy, this extraordinary fashion show evokes both the timelessness of ancient Egypt and its enduring influence on modern design and aesthetics. Accompanied by informative and entertaining commentary, the show not only explains some of the rudiments of Egyptian fashion and clothing, but also updates them in a spectacular new way. A not-to-be-missed juxtaposition of past and future, where the splendour of ancient civilization comes wrapped in the excitement of a modern fashion show, as Egypt walks the runway in the Grand Hall of the Canadian Museum of Civilization.
