Canadian Museum of Civilization on Its Way to Best Year Ever

Hull, Quebec, July 9, 1998 — The Canadian Museum of Civilization (CMC) has attracted over 16% more visitors so far this year, compared to the same period last year. As of July 7, more than 465,000 people have taken in this season's offerings at the Museum, making 1998 the best year ever since the CMC's opening in 1989. In addition, more than 1.3 million pages of the Museum's Web site were accessed during the same period, a 200% increase over last year.

"1998 is definitely shaping up to be a blockbuster year for the Canadian Museum of Civilization," said Dr. George F. MacDonald, President and CEO of the CMC Corporation. "This exceptional building is now filled with equally remarkable treasures — from prehistoric artifacts to virtual reality tours of Ancient Egypt. Never before has the Museum had so much to offer in terms of activities, exhibitions and events, with such a strong appeal for visitors of all ages and tastes."

Mysteries of Egypt alone has attracted more than 200,000 visitors since its opening May 8, 1998, as verified by a special people-counter installed for this particular exhibition. The accompanying IMAX® film has consistently attracted full houses.

Visitorship shows no signs of slowing down. On Canada Day, for example, the Museum welcomed over 14,000 visitors. It is expected that Mysteries of Egypt will surpass its projected goal of 500,000 visitors less than half way through the exhibition's run, which lasts until March 1999.

Visitors also stay to tour the Museum's numerous other attractions, including major new exhibitions such as Legends of Our Times: Native Ranching and Rodeo Life on the Plains and Plateau and Reservation X, on aboriginal contemporary art. The perennially fascinating permanent galleries such as the Canada Hall, recounting 1,000 years of European settlement; the majestic Grand Hall, where totem poles and houses reflect the Native culture of the northwest coast; the Jean Paul Lemieux: His Canada exhibition at the Canadian Postal Museum; and the ever-popular Canadian Children's Museum are all visitor favourites.

For Canadians across the country, for tourists from around the world and for local residents of all ages, the Canadian Museum of Civilization is a must-see in Canada's national capital region.
