THE CANADIAN FILM INSTITUTE PRESENTS 1999 LATIN AMERICAN FILM FESTIVAL AT THE CANADIAN MUSEUM OF CIVILIZATION

Hull, Quebec, May 10, 1999 — The Canadian Film Institute (CFI) presents its third annual Latin American Film Festival at the Canadian Museum of Civilization from May 20 to 27. Founded by the CFI in 1997, the festival features six National Capital premieres of films from Argentina, Cuba, Mexico, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela.

"From light comedies to intense political dramas, this year's festival demonstrates the range and diversity in Latin American cinema," says CFI director Tom McSorley. "Latin America has created some of the finest films in the history of cinema, but we up here in the north do not often get a chance to see this impressive set of national cinemas. This event offers a great opportunity to see what's being produced from Tierra del Fuego to the Rio Grande. I should also emphasize that, due to the ongoing renovations at our regular venue at 395 Wellington Street, we are presenting this year's edition at the Canadian Museum of Civilization, and we are appreciative of their collaboration."

Film schedule:
Thursday, May 20 - 7:30 p.m.
IMPOSTOR/El Impostor - Argentina, 1997 - Director: Alejandro Maci - 95 minutes

Saturday, May 22 - 7:30 p.m.
ADORABLE LIES/Adorables Mentiras - Cuba, 1991 - Director: Gerardo Chijona - 108 minutes
Chijona's playful, exuberant film concerns Jorge Luis, a youngish married man who dreams of becoming a filmmaker. When he meets an aspiring actress, it's love at first take; or is it?

Sunday, May 23 - 7:30 p.m.
RECIPES TO STAY TOGETHER/Cilantro y perejil - Mexico, 1996 - Director: Rafael Montero Garcia - 95 minutes
After their marriage ends, Carlos and Susana try to fall in love with other people. A light and entertaining comedy about the state of the couple in the 1990s. A huge hit in Mexico.

Monday, May 24 - 7:30 p.m.
UNDER THE SKIN/Bajo la piel - Peru/Spain, 1996 - Director: Francisco Lombardi - 110 minutes
From Peru's leading filmmaker comes this tautly constructed, haunting tale of a police officer investigating a series of grisly murders with the help of an attractive female pathologist.

Tuesday, May 25 - 7:30 p.m.
THE LIFE JACKET IS UNDER YOUR SEAT/El Chevrole - Uruguay, 1998 - Director: Leonardo Ricagni - 94 minutes
This is the wildly offbeat story of Tulque, a modern-day messiah leading the fight to save a water sanctuary from a corrupt government and local drug lords. Destined for cult status.

Thursday, May 27 - 7:30 p.m.
THE VOICE OF THE HEART/La voz del corazon - Venezuela, 1997 - Director: Carlos Oteyza - 97 minutes
Traveling into the wilds of Venezuela, Tomas encounters corporate environmental abuses and starts a dangerous love affair with a woman searching for answers about her husband's death.
