The History of Atlantic Canada's fisheries on CD-ROM co-produced by the Canadian Museum of Civilization

Hull, Quebec, November 5, 1999 — A new interactive, bilingual CD-ROM, entitled Balancing the Scales: Canada's East Coast Fisheries, was released this fall by IDON EAST Corporation, the Canadian Museum of Civilization and Parks Canada.

The project partners hope to foster an understanding of the importance of the fisheries to Atlantic Canada and to the rest of the country by presenting their history, right back to prehistoric times. The CD-ROM complements a major exhibition of the same name being developed by the Canadian Museum of Civilization, in partnership with several Atlantic Canadian museums, for the year 2001.

The exhibition will examine the East Coast's resilient cultures, from the earliest Aboriginal communities, to the Basque, French and English fishermen of the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries, to the present day. It will explore daily life, the impact of changes in technology and varied activities from cod to lobster fishing, whaling, seal hunting and the sports fishery.

"In Balancing the Scales we wanted to present current and original research on Atlantic Canada's various marine harvests in a highly illustrated, informative and easily understood package," said Dr. Peter Rider, Atlantic Provinces Historian of the Canadian Museum of Civilization.
