Voyage across the Atlantic with the Vikings

January 19, 2005 — Gatineau (Quebec) — Starting on January 22, the Canadian Museum of Civilization’s IMAX Theatre invites you to travel through history with the new film, Vikings. This cinematic adventure places audiences at the heart of a voyage of exploration at the prow of a Viking longship, sailing past giant icebergs in the company of a brave Viking crew. Focusing on a people renowned for its fierce warriors as well as its skilled explorers and farmers, this epic documentary unveils a dynamic culture and sheds light on one of the most intriguing civilizations in world history.

Shot on location in Iceland, Greenland and England, as well as in the Canadian provinces of Quebec and Newfoundland, the film required lengthy preparation, involving several months of intensive research with some of the world’s leading Canadian, American and European experts on the Viking civilization. Great care was taken with each historical scene, giving the film an authentic feel that truly reflects the Viking era. A 16-metre-long reproduction of a longship was made for reenactments of some of the Vikings’ greatest seafaring feats, enabling audiences to relive the discovery of North America — 500 years before the arrival of Christopher Columbus!

Produced by the creators of Adrenaline, which enjoyed considerable success at the IMAX Theatre in 2003, Vikings was written and directed by Marc Fafard and produced by the Quebec-based company Sky High Entertainment. Vikings will be presented on the IMAX Theatre’s giant screen starting January 22, in addition to Forces of Nature, which will be presented on the IMAX Dome until June 2005.
