“Rocket” Richard exhibition goes virtual

Gatineau, Quebec, February 3, 2005 — The exhibition “Rocket” Richard: The Legend, The Legacy closes on February 20, but fans of the great hockey legend can visit the new virtual exhibition that commemorates one of the most important figures in the history of Canadian hockey. More than 180,000 people have visited the full exhibition since its opening on April 9, 2004, and the Canadian Museum of Civilization encourages the public to take advantage of the next couple of weeks to visit the exhibition before it closes.

The exhibition has been designed to appeal not only to hockey fans, but to anyone who either lived through The Rocket’s heyday or wants to understand his significance to Canadian history. It has certainly struck an emotional chord with many people, as messages left at the exhibition’s popular “speaker’s corner” video booth demonstrate. Many people chose to leave personal messages addressed directly to The Rocket, while others speak of their pride and awe of his achievements as a fierce competitor and exciting hockey player.

The exhibition presents 100 remarkable objects, half of which were once owned by Maurice Richard, including the last Number 9 hockey sweater he wore as a playing member of the Montreal Canadiens, hockey sticks used to score landmark goals, trophies, pucks, skates, sweaters, his Hall of Fame induction ring and the original copy of his retirement speech. Tribute songs and personal stories told by team-mates and opponents round out this portrait of a player and his city. Richard’s memory draws Canadians together in celebration of our national sport.

The Internet address for The Rocket virtual exhibition is http://www.civilization.ca/hist/rocket/rocket1e.html. Virtual visitors will hear stories and see images of important goals, awards and photographs from every hockey season: reminders of how important a figure Maurice Richard proved to be. It demonstrates how this sports hero became a Quebec legend, a Canadian icon, and a world celebrity.

The exhibition “Rocket” Richard: The Legend — The Legacy is produced in partnership with Canada Post and it is scheduled to travel across Canada between September 2005 and May 2010.
