Vues d’Afrique – African and Caribbean Film Festival


On April 15, 18 and 19, in conjunction with the new exhibition Beads of Life, the Canadian Museum of Civilization is screening African films in the Museum Theatre. These evenings will feature a variety of films, from shorts to a feature to a full-length documentary, all produced by African filmmakers. The films are presented in association with the 21st Journées du Cinéma africain et créole, being held in Montreal from April 14-24, 2005.

Tickets: $6.00 each evening.

April 15 — 7:30 p.m.

An evening of short films
(14 years of age and over)

Safi, la petite mère (in French)
Raso Ganemtore, Burkina Faso
26 minutes, 2004

Safi is an eight-year-old girl whose mother dies giving birth to a baby boy. According to tradition, the baby must be sacrificed in order to be reunited with his mother, and to keep bad luck away from the village. Safi flees to the city, taking the baby with her…

Lamokowang (without dialogue)
Ndaliko Katondolo Petna, Uganda
13 minutes, 2004

In this film, the calabash serves as a metaphor for Africa and its depiction in film. The rhythms get tangled up, the better to question yesterday’s cinema while sharply addressing the cinema of tomorrow: will the digital age be another dream, or will it become a nightmare?

Moussa, a married man in his fifties, decides to go out as night falls. He roams the streets of Dakar, looking for a one night stand. He ends up in a nightclub where he meets a beautiful and mysterious young woman named Aïcha.

Samba and Coumba are a blind couple who live as beggars. One day, following the umpteenth bus strike, they decide to leave for Dakar on foot. Samba leads the way and, along the road, finds a whistle. When he blows into it, he regains his sight, but refuses at first to let his wife benefit from this miraculous instrument...

Massaï – Les guerriers de la pluie (In French)

Faced with a drought that threatens the lives of their livestock and their families, village elders send a team of inexperienced young warriors in search of a mythical lion: a quest which could put an end to the curse.

Feature-length documentary

Story of a Beautiful Country (In English)
Khalo Matabane, South Africa/Canada
73 minutes, 2004

Filmmaker Khalo Matabane travels this “magnificent country” — the promised land, South Africa — to meet average people and find out what they think about various subjects: the land, language, globalization, democracy, identity and violence. The documentary also expresses the hopes and dreams of youth: a generation searching to find its place in the new South Africa, and to make itself heard.
