Gatineau, Quebec, March 16, 2005 — The Canadian Museum of Civilization invites you to see and experience The Quilt of Belonging, Canada’s largest and most comprehensive textile art project, at its inaugural exhibition from April 2 to April 10, 2005.
The Quilt of Belonging is a 36.6 metre long (120 feet) tapestry, a national work of art made by cultural groups from Victoria to Newfoundland and up to the Arctic Circle. The materials used to create the 263 hand-made blocks range from beaded caribou hides to Scottish tartans, from gold embroidered silk to the gossamer wings of butterflies, from 100-year-old homespun linens to African mud cloth. The blocks represent all of Canada’s First Peoples and all of the nations of the world, since all are part of the Canadian mosaic.
